At age 15, she began to study drawing and continued to hone these skills through her teens and early adult years. She resided in Cuba from 1833-1835, after which she returned to Salem. From November 1851 to May 1852, the Hawthornes moved in with the Mann family, the educator Horace Mann and his wife, Mary, who was Sophia's sister. After Lathrops death, Rose became a nun, Mother Mary Alphonsa Lathrop, and founded the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne.
